Wigan's pie panel - find out how YOU can join here
Pooles Pies, one of the UK's oldest pie makers, is searching for Wigan's most passionate pie people to join their specialist panel – and create a tax-free ‘People's Pie'.
The move is the brainchild of new owner, Neil Court-Johnston, who is determined to reignite the region's passion for pies, particularly in the wake of the latest ‘pie-gate' scandal. He explains:
"Wherever you are, the issue of what makes a good pie generates a lively debate. All the talk of a pie and pasty tax has lit a fuse with the British public. The pie and pasty means a lot to us, and we should do all we can to celebrate this traditional British fayre when it is threatened most.
"As the nation's oldest pie company, based in the home of pie making, we've decided to re-open the debate on what makes the great British pie...with a tax free twist.”
The new MD is looking to select a 12 person panel from the North West to ensure that the famous pies are of the highest quality. Those selected will be invited to a series of specially arranged sweet and savoury pie-tasting sessions to review every recipe and offer their opinions.
Mr Court-Johnston continues:
"The selected members of the panel will be invited to advise us on existing products, help us create new recipe ideas and try new dishes before anyone else.
"Pooles is a company steeped in tradition that has always managed to grow with the times. Now, we are giving people the opportunity to play an important role in the future of Pooles and help us to shape the decisions we take.
"The message to the people of Wigan is simple, if you're passionate about traditional, wholesome food, we'd love to hear from you. And, whatever the Chancellor decides, we will ensure that the first product the Pooles' Panel inspire – The People's Pie - will be pie tax free!”
Pooles was established in 1847 as a local craft bakery, which ultimately became a household name in the North West. Dave Whelan bought the company in the late 1980s, transforming the Wigan factory into a state of the art 200,000sq ft. plant that could make up to 25,000 pies and pastries an hour. Pooles has won the Premier League Best Pie Award over three consecutive years.
