Latics cruise through in Cup

Tuesday, August 28th 2012 22:38

Boselli nets the opener

Wigan Athletic have made their way through to the 3rd Round of the League Cup with a 4-1 win at Nottingham Forest.

Latics made 7 changes from their win at Southampton on Saturday, including a first start in 3 years for striker Mauro Boselli and it was the Argentine who opened the scoring just before the half hour mark. Boselli (pictured right) getting on the end of an inch perfect cross from Ronnie Stam to head the visitors in front.

Wigan were cruising 5 minutes later when Maynor Figueroa let fly from 25 yards to make it 2-0 and Jordi Gomez made it 3-0 just before half time with an equally stunning strike.

But Forest came out fired up after the break and got themselves back in the game, when Simon Cox capitalised on some slack defending to fire past Ali Al Habsi from 25 yards.

Wigan looked like a different team, and the home side were dominating possession for the first time in the game, making it a nervy second half for Roberto Martinez.

When Antolin Alcaraz got himself sent off for a second booking 10 minutes from full time, a tense finish seemed to be on the cards, but Wigan regained their composure and when Calum McManaman made it 4-1 with a cool finish, that was game over.
