Mauro Boselli scores his second goalWigan Athletic stormed into the 4th Round of the League Cup with a comfortable 4-1 win at fellow Premier League side West Ham.
As expected both sides made a number of changes from the weekend’s league games, and it was two players who started on the bench in those games who opened the scoring.
Modibo Maiga struck first for the home side, capitalising on slack Wigan passing to drill a shot past Ali Al Habsi, but the lead lasted barely 10 minutes as Mauro Boselli levelled the scores with a neat finish from 6 yards out.
Wigan looked composed in possession, rarely looking threatened and made their dominance count taking a 3-1 lead into half time, after Ivan Ramis had smashed home his first goal for the club, and Boselli had coolly chipped in his second of the game.
The second half had less of an edge, as Wigan took complete control of match, slowing the pace and making West Ham chase the ball, pressing forward when the opportunities came along.
10 minutes from time, Latics made the most of one of those opportunities as James McArthur was pulled down by West Ham keeper Stephen Henderson and Jordi Gomez made it 4-1 from the penalty spot.
