Rodallega heads in the openerWigan are still looking for their first home win of the season, after a familiar face helped Fulham to a 2-1 win at the DW.
It was a cagey first half with neither side dominating possession and chances at a premium.
Arouna Kone struck first for Wigan, but Mark Schwarzer was equal to his effort, while Hugo Rodallega’s header was well saved by his former team-mate Ali Al Habsi.
Al Habsi wasn’t so lucky minutes later, however, when Rodallega on his first return to the DW, jumped highest to meet Dimitar Berbatov’s inch perfect chip cross and put his new team in front.
As Wigan pressed for an equaliser before half time, Jordi Gomez saw his first-time shot come back off the cross bar, after good work from Jean Beausejour down the left and Latics maintained their pressure after half time.
They were dominating possession and creating the better chances. Kone was annoyed after wasting a one on one chance, firing his shot straight at Schwarzer, and substitute Mauro Boselli fluffed a glorious opportunity to level the scores, skewing a close range effort wide.
And Wigan were made to pay for their lack of a cutting edge, as poor defending allowed Brian Ruiz to create space for Damien Duff who fired past Al Habsi with his weaker right foot from just inside the box to make it 2-0.
Kone pulled a goal back for Wigan in injury time, but by then it was too late and Roberto Martinez has 3 days to regroup his players ahead of a tricky League Cup trip to West Ham.
