70 year old man hits robbers over the head

A homeowner fought off two intruders who broke into his Leigh home.

At about 10.30pm on Sunday 8 April 2012, two men smashed the window of a house on New Barn Lane.

They climbed through the window and once inside demanded the occupant hand them his keys.

The victim, a 70-year-old man, hit one of the intruders over the head.

Both offenders escaped empty handed through the broken window. During their escape the victim grabbed one offender’s leg and cut his hand in the broken glass during a struggle.

He was taken to hospital and received stitches to his hand.

The offenders are described as white, about 5ft 11in tall and were wearing black clothing and balaclavas.

Police constable Sophie Roberts, of the Volume Crime Team, said: "The victim, when confronted by two intruders who smashed their way into his house, thought nothing of his own safety and bravely fought them off.

"Thankfully nothing was stolen but his determination not to let them get away has resulted in him suffering a hand injury and I want anyone with information about whoever might be responsible to contact me before they can try this again.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7203, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
