A man has been jailed for historic sexual offences against two children.

Derek Robinson (20/05/1949), of Robertscroft Close, Poundswick, was found guilty of rape, three counts of gross indecency and eight counts of indecent assault following a trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Today, Thursday 5 July 2012, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The offences relate to the sexual abuse two girls while Robinson was living in Wythenshawe and at an address in Croydon, London.

His first victim was just six-years-old when the abuse began and took place between 1985 and 1993.

He groomed the girl and regularly bought her gifts, including toys and sweets. He even told his young victim that she was a "sex maniac".

The second victim was eight-years-old when she was first abused by Robinson in about 1986.

The first victim reported the abuse to police in March 2010.

Detective Constable Jane Naylor, of West Didsbury CID, said: "Robinson committed the most appalling abuse on two young girls over a prolonged period of time.

"He struck when they were alone and too young and scared to report the abuse or fully understand what was happening to them.

"The women have been incredibly brave in reporting the abuse and I must give them extra credit for finding the strength to give evidence at court because thanks to their evidence Robinson is now in prison where he belongs.

"Greater Manchester Police will thoroughly investigate all reports of sexual abuse regardless of when they happened or how old the victim is or was and we have specially trained officers who will work with and support victims throughout the criminal process and beyond."
