Famous 'Wide to West' try immortolised in song
One of the greatest tries in rugby league history is being celebrated as part of the exciting Sing Along a’ Saints arts project - which uses the power of rugby to engage people in singing activity.
Written by the Citadel Arts Centre, the song ‘Wide To West’ is based on the famous events of the match in 2000 when St.Helens were losing in the play-off with time up. Miraculously Saints managed to keep the ball in play using a new combination, involving Dwayne West, Sean Long and Chris Joynt –who eventually scored the winning try.
A video for the song is being shot on the Knowsley Road site, Langtree Park and in a recording studio. However project organisers are looking for men to get involved in what promises to be a humorous re-creation of the events of that famous night 12 years ago. The song will be filmed on Wednesday 11 July with a rehearsal on Monday 9 July (6pm
–8pm) at the Springfield pub in Thatto Heath.
Eddie Hemmings, the commentator who was on duty on the night of the try and whose famous ‘It’s wide to West, it’s wide to West’ line is now the stuff of legends has leant his voice to the cause of the project. He said: "I’m humbled to have been part of such an iconic piece of rugby league history and feel privileged that now, my commentary has been the inspiration for the newly penned song from Saints fans. I’m truly excited to see the music video premiere at the Saints v Warrington match, at which I will be commentating." St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Urban Regeneration, Housing and Culture, Councillor Barrie Grunewald said: "This is a fantastic project - which uses the power of the Saints brand to get people involved in the arts." "St Helens Rugby League Club are such an important part of the fabric and culture of this town and ‘Sing Along a’ Saints’ is a unique way to express, capture and display the passion which makes this town unique." The Sing Along a’ Saints initiative is a partnership project involving St.Helens Rugby League Club, St.Helens Council and re:new. It’s being delivered by The Citadel and funded by the Arts Council of England. Anyone over 18 interested in getting involved can do so and no previous experience is required. Anyone interested should contact Carmel Baines at the Citadel on 01744 762305
