Police appeal for witnesses after Wigan fire

Thursday, August 2nd 2012 01:00

Industrial unit completely destroyed at Eckersley Mill

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fire in Wigan.

At around 4am on Tuesday 31 July 2012, the fire service were called to Eckersley Mill Industrial Estate off Swan Meadow Road after a large fire destroyed one industrial unit and damaged two others.

Inside one of the units were a number of motorbikes and cars.

Fire crews extinguished the flames and no one was injured.

Now an investigation has been launched to establish how the fire started.

Detective Constable Brendan Greally from Wigan CID said: "The contents of the units were destroyed in the fire which caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage and a number of businesses have sadly been greatly affected.

"At least one of the units is completely destroyed and will need to be knocked down as it is now unsafe.

"We are now investigating the cause of the blaze, which at this time is being treated as unexplained. Due to the advanced nature of the fire, it I believed it may have started around 30 minutes before the fire brigade was called.

"Any witnesses who saw anybody or any vehicles acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the fire should phone police on 0161 856 7352 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
