Vandals torch girl guide's hut in Leigh

Wednesday, August 1st 2012 01:00

Vandals have destroed a girl guide's hut in an arson attack in Leigh.

It happened at the hut on Old Hall Mill Lane in Leigh at about 6.50pm on 22 July 2012.

Emergency services were called to the fire and discovered two seats, one in the main hall of hut and another in a small outside toilet block. The fire completely destroyed the hut and the outer building.

Police are now appealing to anyone who has information to come forward.

Police Constable Andy Cook said: "We are treating this as a deliberate ignition which has completely destroyed the building. In doing so, it has deprived the girls of a much-needed community facility which has understandably caused a great deal of upset.

"Whomever is responsible may not have intended to cause such destruction, but this shows how dangerous it can be to start fires. No-one can control a blaze once it starts and the consequences can be severe.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information to come forward.

"I would also ask any parents who might have recently washed their children’s clothes and found them to smell strongly of smoke to think about whether your child could have been responsible and if you do have suspicions, please do the right thing and come forward."
