Council dog welfare and enforcement officers, assisted by police, had to use bolt cutters to free a trapped and abandoned dog from a water pumping station in Merton Bank, St Helens.

The emaciated, female cross-breed, spotted by a member of the public, spent the night at a local vet’s where she was given antibiotics to help recover from her ordeal.

Council officers believe the dog had been thrown over the fence into the secure compound surrounding the station.

However St Helens Council's Dog Welfare and Enforcement Service say she is responding to treatment and getting stronger every day.

"She was wet, shivering and around half the weight she should be when we found her,” said Principal Environmental Health Officer Diane Foreman, "but now she’s managing to keep solid food down. We’ll be looking after her for the next few days and keeping a close eye on her before hopefully finding her a new home.”
