A paedophile, who raped a teenage boy at knifepoint, was put behind bars indefinitely today. (Fri)

A judge told Mark Jarrett, who dramatically held a craft blade to his throat ion the dock when he was convicted in July, that he represents a serious danger to the public.

As well as threatening the 16-year-old rape victim with a knife, on a later occasion he again abused him and grabbed a knife but the boy was able to flee.

Judge Stephen Everett told 43-year-old Jarrett that he will not be freed from prison until he has proved he is no longer a risk. "You have to appreciate the way you behave towards other people and change your thought processes.

"You are a long, long way from that right at the moment."

"It is clear to me that regrettably you and knives go together and you are prepared to use them. At the moment you have no idea of the seriousness of your behaviour in terms of sexual acts or using knives."

Jarrett, of Frog Lane, Wigan, had been found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court of one offence of rape and three of sexually assaulting the boy on two occasions and cleared of two other sexual assaults.

When convicted he produced the craft blade and threatened to kill himself and told the jury they had blood on their hands. He was only disarmed after 40 minute negotiations with court police staff.

Judge Everett ordered that Jarrett, who has no previous convictions, serve a minimum term of five years before he can apply to the Parole Board but warned him he may never be released. He also ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

As he was led to the cells today he shouted over to his father and brother, "You know the truth, clear my name, make sure everybody knows the truth."

The court had heard how Jarrett had befriended the boy who began visiting his flat. While there in April last year Jarrett threatened him with knife, made him strip, sexually assaulted and raped him.

Afterwards he apologised and begged the boy, who was terrified and found the situation unreal, not to tell anyone and promised it would never happen again.

But in June that year he plied the boy with alcohol and molested him over his clothing and when the boy objected he went to get a knife. The victim fled and told his girlfriend and the matter came to the attention of the police.
