The Shark Dive Challenge

Forty years after Jaws hit the big screen, the award-winning Cheshire Oaks aquarium is celebrating the ocean’s ultimate predators with new shark trails, exhibitions and talks on site as well as a guest appearance by Finlay, the Sale Sharks mascot.

Special shark workshops will take place three times a day and visitors will be able to find out all about these fascinating creatures and the many conservation projects around the world to try and help protect them.

There will be daily shark feeds and dive shows in the giant Aquatheatre and visitors will even have the chance to enter their own ‘shark selfies’ in to an online competition to win a year’s family pass to the aquarium.

Blue Planet Aquarium is home to one of Europe’s largest collection of shark and rays with more than 40 different species on display from native dogfish and bull huss to tropical lemon and three-metre-long sand tiger sharks.

Blue Planet Aquarium’s Phil Jones said: “Jaws was a hugely successful film but it also taught millions of people worldwide to fear sharks.

“We’re hoping the combination of fun facts, talks, feeding demonstrations and our own shark workshops will help to provide our visitors with a different view of these much-maligned predators.
“Sharks are always one of the most asked about creatures by visitors and we’re hoping that by providing a week-long event dedicated to these amazing fish we will be able to convert some more youngsters into shark loves rather than shark fearers,” he added.

Blue Planet Aquarium even offers visitors the once in a lifetime opportunity to dive with sharks.

Sharks first appeared in our seas 350 million years ago - that’s a 100 million years before the dinosaurs. Today there are over 350 different species from the 18cm spined pygmy shark to the 18-metre whale shark.

British waters are visited by around 30 different species - including the world’s second largest, the basking shark, which can grow to 12 metres.
