Campaign Launched To Take Play About Wigan To The West End

It's hoped "Beyond Wigan Pier" - a follow up to George Orwell's controversial novel "The Road To Wigan Pier" will make it all the way to the West End

Locals are being asked to help Wigan take on the West End with the borough's first musical written by, performed by and starring Wiganers!

George Orwell's novel "Road To Wigan Pier" portayed the industrial heritage of the town; as one of a number of Northern, cotton and coal "power houses", in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

But the portrayal of Wigan in Orwell's novel is also one of a town beaten by misery, filth and poverty.

The project is the brainchild of local man Alan Gregory

"It's part of our heritage" Alan told us

"We want to sort of applaud what people did in those days with very little money but we also want to show that yes that was the past, we are behind it but we want to show what Wigan is like in the future so the second act will show how Wigan has grown

Crowdfunding's been launched with the curtain due to raise in April at the town's Edge Theatre.
