At around 6.45am on Saturday a man entered the ARG Food and Wine Store on Hardybutts. He starting making demands before launching a violent attack swinging a machete in the direction of the shop assistant.
The store employees were unharmed and the offender fled the shop empty-handed heading towards Darlington Street East.
About half an hour later, a second attack occurred at RS McColls Convenience Store on Warrington Road. It is believed the same offender was involved as he once again brandished a machete at the shop assistant who was forced to hand over cash and cigarettes.
Police have now released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with these incidents.
Detective Constable Brendan Greally, of GMP’s Wigan borough, said: “The offender showed absolutely no regard for the victims as he subjected them to a terrifying attack as he threatened them with machetes.
"Thankfully no-one was injured but the actions of this man could have easily had devastating consequences.
“I would encourage anyone with any information to come forward so we can ensure the individual responsible is held accountable for his actions.”
