Steve Rotherham Calls London Assembly Members ‘Arrogant’ and ‘Blinkered’

Rotherham said "We can’t continue in a situation where it’s cake for London and crumbs for the North"

It's after they called for HS2 to be cancelled and the money to instead be spent on London’s Crossrail scheme.

Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of Liverpool City Region, has lambasted as ‘arrogant’ and ‘blinkered’ London Assembly members' call for cancellation of HS2 to the North.

The group of London Assembly members used today’s Sunday Politics London programme to call not only for HS2 to the Midlands and the North to be cancelled but also for the money to instead be spent on London’s Crossrail scheme.

Any money left over could then, they suggested, be allocated to Northern Powerhouse Rail.

Dismissing the proposals today, Metro Mayor Rotheram said:

“The sheer arrogance of this is just staggering. We all know that London already receives thousands of pounds more in transport funding per person, every year, than the North. Yet here are London MPs calling for even more funding for London – and for that to come directly at the expense of the North.

“We can’t continue in a situation where it’s cake for London and crumbs for the North. It’s got to stop for the benefit of the whole of the UK."

Metro Mayor Rotheram and Greater Manchester counter-part Andy Burnham last week set out their five top priorities for more powers and funding to the North, including stripping Northern Rail of it's franchise.

Metro Mayor Rotheram continued:

“I am absolutely clear – along with leaders from across the North – that delivering both HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail is the fundamental cornerstone for re-balancing the UK economy. But it’s more than that. We are also demanding more powers and funding in key policy areas to gain control of our whole railway network, sort out our bus services, improve our air quality, devolve billions of pounds of unspent apprenticeship levy to Combined Authorities and tackle the scourge of rough sleeping.”
